On my drive to a shoot a wedding, I noticed local authorities were setting up a giant US flag overlooking the NJ Turnpike, each end suspended on the tiller ladders of two fire trucks. I pulled over and tried taking pictures from my car but the firefighters yelled at me to come to them. I thought I was in trouble. In actuality, they were ecstatic: they wanted the shots to be up close and personal.
They led me onto the closed premises and told me how they do this every Memorial Day, a nod to veterans everywhere—rain or shine, not matter how windy.
And so, to the servicemen and veterans fighting for a cause greater than themselves, I say: thank you. This is for you.
